Led by KTC board members Donna Enz and Nancy Allen, 11 riders biked from Harms Road to the town of Klickitat, a distance of approximately 16 miles. Weather was clear with some wind and temperatures were in the 60’s. At the initial meeting at Balfour-Klickitat Park near the Lyle Trailhead, they observed a bald eagle on the spit at the Klickitat River and then observed another bald eagle along the Klickitat River while carpooling to the town of Klickitat.

At Swale Canyon, they observed Coopers Hawk, Harrier, and 6 shore birds, possibly Yellow Leg. They heard Canyon Wrens and Meadow Larks. Many marmots, ground squirrels and a coyote were also seen.

It was KTC's good fortune that Paul Slichter was a bike ride participant.  While visiting his Wildflower Bloom in the Columbia River Gorge website, be sure to see his extensive plant list made specifically for the April 17th bike ride, as well as enjoy his links to other wildflower-oriented hikes he has documented.

Petrified tree
This year, instead of ending the ride at Wahkiakus, the bikers rode all the way to the town of Klickitat via the old Champion Haul Road. Along the way, they stopped at the petrified tree and at the columnar basalt. In all, it took about 4 hours to complete the ride.

Thanks to Dan Enz, Cheryl Steindorf and Phil Grasser who helped shuttle riders and bikes. Many thanks also to Larry Jones for providing excellent photos, and to Paul Slichter for his plant list and pictorial display.
